What is Lomi Lomi?
Lomi Lomi is the Hawaiian word for “massage”, though it’s deeper meaning and application has many layers. Traditionally, this healing treatment was practiced within families, each with their own unique style, and passed on by the elder to a chosen family member to continue the lineage.
Lomi Lomi is rooted in Hawaiian Way of Life and Consciousness. It takes a long time & deep commitment to understand and connect with, because of the vast amount of knowledge (ʻike) that is held in the language (‘ōlelo), stories (mo’olelo), hula, oli (chants), pule (prayers), in the land (ʻāina) & people (kānaka).
The physical practice of the massage alone is not traditional Lomi Lomi.
That is why our Hālau collaborates with other Kumus and wisdom-keepers who can perpetuate the Teachings of Hawaiian Traditions.
Our training is supported by Teachings from Kumu Paʻa Julia Nālani of Hālau Pō Me Nani, whose Path to Paʻa and Luna Hoʻoponopono courses form part of our Lomi Lomi Bodywork Training.
This is especially important if we are non-Hawaiians, so that we can be in alignment with Teachings that are Culturally-Correct.
Our Lineage of Lomi Lomi Nui comes from Kahu Abraham Kawai’i, of Kauai, Hawai’i.
A brief description of what our Lomi Lomi Nui Bodywork session looks like, from the outside:
Lomi Lomi Nui treatment starts with Protocol to prepare and protect the space, Client, and Practitioner for the healing potential of this practice.
Oli & Pule open the pathway to our ancestors who guide the work, followed by a consultation. The Bodywork follows, with the therapist working in long flowing strokes all around the body, using forearms & hands. A particular rhythm characterizes the main strokes, taught by Kahu Abraham as “Ka’aleleau -the dance of the Navigator”.
The Practitioner is guided by the knowing of the na’au/gut, with a deep awareness of the Client, a silent communication & exchange begins to unfold….Sessions traditionally last a few hours, and are sometimes structured into set times for modern application.
And that’s just the beginning….
WHAT IS HAWAIIAN HEALING &
LOMI LOMI NUI TRAINING?
Lomi Lomi is the Hawaiian word for “massage”, though it’s deeper meaning and application has many layers and levels. The word in Hawaiian language, “Lomi”, means to “rub, press, wring out, pound”.
The double-barrel of this word implies the importance of this action and expands it into the “spiritual realm” and for people to realise the importance of this practice. Another example of this is “ho’oponopono”.
Lomi Lomi is rooted in ancient, traditional practice, a unique cultural way of thinking and seeing the world. Hawaiian consciousness and way of life takes a long time to unpack, with a deep commitment to understanding and connecting with the teachings – because of the immense amount of knowledge that is held in the stories (mo’olelo), hula, oli (chants), pule (prayers), the language (‘ōlelo) & in the land (ʻāina) & people (kānaka).
To understand the nature of Lomi Lomi, and the deeper applications of this work, we need to explore Hawaiian consciousness – the Hawaiian World View – to get to the roots & foundation of what it is, where it comes from, and what is asked of us, as we develop this practice to its full potential. This is why we collaborate with Kumus/Teachers who have this ʻike/knowledge well preserved, and we are grateful to Kumu Paʻa Julia Nālani Adams of Hālau Pō Me Nani to offer “Path to Paʻa” Teachings, which will be part of your Lomi Lomi Nui Training.
This is especially important if we are non-Hawaiians. To have respect for this sacred work, we must have a connection with the people, the Source, the land, the stories, the language, the chants, the prayers, the protocols, the way of thinking, the proverbs, the dance, the myths & legends.
It is important to understand that Lomi Lomi massage is one part of a whole interconnected system of Hawaiian Healing. It starts with Akua/Higher Being, as nothing happens without the presence of Akua – this is the number one Teaching. Other pillars of this cultural or healing system include oli/chant, hula, ʻolelo/language, mōʻolelo/stories, pule/prayer, laʻau lapaʻau/herbal medicine, sacred places, cleansing practices, ho’oponopono, community, hoʻoponopono, ʻohana/family, ʻāina/land.
The physical practice of the massage alone, is NOT traditional Lomi Lomi…nothing happens without the presence of Akua/Higher Being, and it is our ‘aumākua/ancestors that guide, protect, communicate and connect us with ʻAkua.

IS THIS TRAINING RIGHT FOR ME?
Do you believe that the Great Mystery of Life brings things in to your Life at the right place, the right time? Our ancestors guide us, and give us ho’ailona /signs, of where to go, if we are aware to notice.
The training is centered on practicing the powerful healing bodywork of Lomi Lomi, in the context of Hawaiian Healing. This means that the physical practice of the bodywork is just the tip of the iceberg! This is not a “massage technique” that belongs on a Spa menu, it is a sacred practice of ALOHA, infused with MANA / spiritual power (of our ancestors). We as therapists have to learn to “get out of our own way” to allow Spirit to move & guide us and our clients – that’s where the divine magic can have space to move. Our training offers you the opportunity to learn how to do this more effectively, to tap in to your limitless potential, to move through fear & self-doubt, to harness your “Bowl of Light”!
People are drawn to this training for a variety of reasons. You may be a bodywork practitioner who feels there is a deeper way of connecting with clients. You may have no bodywork experience, though would like to know how to heal within your family.
Previous bodywork experience such as massage, is not required to join this training, however we are looking for students who have the qualities of:
- Respect
- Compassion
- Empathy
- Patience
- Listening Skills
- Honesty/Willingness to Speak Up
- Belief in a Higher Power/Akua
- Be in tune with how to maintain Boundaries between giver/receiver, awareness of receiverʻs vulnerabilities, and provision of safety
- Follow the code of Ethics of Hālau Lei Aloha
In Hālau Lei Aloha, we have created training that is deep, rich and it goes down to the roots and into the Source. It goes further than just the bodywork and the way we train follows traditional Hawaiian protocols and asks of you a commitment that goes beyond the training days and further research and understanding of the KAONA of the language and the meaning of the Oli.
A deeper contemplation of the stories and chants, and how these all relate to the bodywork and the spiritual underpinnings of the system of Hawaiian healing that has a lineage that goes beyond our present time and space is a necessary part of this training.
We know that everyone learns differently, and have created “Blended Learning” platforms which include self-paced online study, Interactive games & quizzes, Workbooks that you can download and print, Live classes, and of course, In-person Residential Retreats for the Bodywork aspects.
To take on this training is to become a steward of the traditions. We always remain students of the practice, it never finishes. Not for our students and not for our teachers.
When you study with us you become part of a Hālau (school) and the lei of Aloha (the circle of love) that becomes your ʻOhana and your community. Hālau is about the creation of a space for learning in which the Hā (many breaths) can come together to grow and thrive.
If this inspires you, we would love to welcome you to our Training!
WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY
November 2016 I had the privilege to meet Louise in Holland for a Lomi Lomi training. Before and after I’ve met her I did a lot of Lomi Lomi trainings in Holland and Spain. I was overwhelmed by Louise her love, knowledge and presence. In the years after my first training with Louise I kept on thinking of her and finally was able to go for an 8-day Lomi Lomi retreat with Louise. It was an indescribable experience, but I will try to give you a taste…The teachings are very special. Louise really embodies the teachings which is very imported to me especially with Lomi Lomi. She teaches with respect and knowledge of the authentic Lineage of Kahu Abraham Abraham Kawai’i. She is very aligned with her students, the teachings or what and when is needed. She is a great observer with unconditional love, has got humour and makes you feel comfortable and safe.
I just had an amazing Lomi Lomi training retreat with Louise. I loved everything about it but I believe that what makes it more special is the presence and attitude of the teacher. Louise is very professional, caring, calm and with a contagious energy. She is also very passionate and knowledgeable of what she does, and it shows throughout the weekend. I can’t wait to go the next level of training and possibly to Hawaii next year to sink in all the beautiful culture and knowledge that I have experienced with my training. Louise makes the space feel safe and creates a great environment to work in.
I have the utmost privilege of knowing Louise Kleu for over 7 years now (2023). I met Louise in one of many women’s healing circles and I got to know her on a deep level in a very intimate group.
It was through Louise’s openness and vulnerability that I was drawn to attending her (very popular) Lomi Lomi training I can honestly say that her training weekends went above and beyond any training I have ever experienced. The way Louise teaches and shares her knowledge in the most genuine and gentle way is something to behold. I have had more than one deep transformational ,healing experience with Louise guiding the way. The healing that I experienced transferred into both my personal life and professional life as a body worker and honestly forever changed me for the better.
I am always blown away by Louise ,with her compassion, empathy, vulnerability, honesty and it is apparent for everyone to see and feel the amount of love and care that she puts into everything she does ,from her teachings and trainings, her beautiful retreats, the nourishing food she makes to the decor of her beautiful home and business. Louise has helped people through huge life metamorphosis.
I am only one of the hundreds of students that have had life changing , healing and profound experiences with Louise . I feel very blessed that after all of these years I can still reach out to Louise in a time of need and no matter what she might be going through in her own journey she is always so kind, supportive and nurturing.
I’m so grateful for Louise to welcome me into her Ohana. I’m a Lomi Lomi practitioner from Hungary, and I have trained with her twice already. I’m amazed of her teaching skills and passion for the healing art. She is a gem, very inspiring person and true spirit. She provides authentic retreats, with full of Aloha and compassion. Very healing in all levels. Highly recommend! Thank you Louise! Mahalo!
